Drive for Education FAQs
To help schools and districts understand the impact of the Drive for Education update to Google Apps for Education, we have collated answers to many of the common questions.
What is the difference between Google Apps for Education and Google Drive for Education?
Google Drive for Education is largely the same as Google Apps for Education, with the addition of:
- Vault email and Drive archive/discovery services
- Unlimited Drive storage
- Audit APIs and tools
- Added administrative features for better visibility and control
Vault is included with Google Apps for Education: What do I need to do to turn it on?
If you do not yet have Vault, it will be provisioned between October 1st and December 31st 2014. All new Drive for Education features will be active between 2015. You do not need to do anything to activate the new services.
We do, however, recommend reviewing Vault settings against best-practice templates to ensure that archiving coverage is in place and matching school or district policies. We also recommend administrator training. Please contact us if you are interested in these services.
Are there resources to help me get started and/or set up Vault?
Yes, we offer configuration and administrator training services. You may also wish to migrate your existing email archive into Vault.
Please contact us if you are interested in any of these services.
We already purchased Vault. Will we get a refund or credit?
We are unable to refund for previous purchases of Vault and/or additional Drive storage. At the end of your current contract, your paid service will not be renewed.
Vault will continue to run, without interruption, as part of the Drive for Education service.
We have Postini / Google Message Discovery. How does this impact us?
Postini / Google Message Discovery customers will get the new features once their migration to Vault is complete.
When does this change take effect?
Google announced the changes on September 30th and they take affect as of October 1, 2014.
Cumulus Global halted processing of new vault orders as of September 26th, upon receiving notice of the impending changes. These customers will have Vault as Drive for Education is rolled out between October 1st and December 31st 2014.
If you need Vault immediately, please contact us. We may be able to arrange early provisioning on a case-by-case basis.
How does this impact non-profits running Google Apps for Education?
Drive for Education is intended for schools and educators. Non-profits running Google Apps for Education as part of the Google Apps for Non-Profit program are not eligible for Drive for Education at this time.
